Hello from Alaska
« on: November 14, 2009, 01:31:11 AM »
Hello all,
I just found this site a couple of days ago and have downloaded all of the podcasts into my ipod.  Cooking is just a hobby but I would like to hone my skills.  Looking forward to meeting other members, sharing information and improving my cooking.  I am just getting into sourdough and rustic bread baking but enjoy all types of cooking.

@Hi Mark,

How's your weather up there? Got snow yet? (I'm in MN -- we've had some snow but it's melted each time)

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I am not sure how to reply to questions so I will just add a post to this topic.  Yes, we have snow and have for the last couple of weeks.  It is currently about 5 degrees and we are loosing about 5 minutes of daylight per day.  I have tons of halibut and salmon in the freezer and am always looking for different ways to prepare the fish.  I am looking forward to exploring the information on this site and networking with others to improve my cooking skills!

@Mark,

I know I'm gonna hate myself for asking this, but what does day-fresh Halibut sell for per pound in your neck of the woods?

Of course, any self respecting Alaskan wouldn't admit to buying Halibut -- right? You just open the front door and they sail right into the pan?  ;)

Last year (2009 season) halibut off the boat was from 4.99 to 6.99 /lb for whole fish where I live (Dillingham, AK) with it being cheaper later in the season.  Dunno what it was where Mark is from.  Whole fish generally run from 25lbs to 90lbs, with most of them in the 30-40lb range.
Shipping is the killer.  Just to get the fish to Seattle can nearly double the cost, and there's the handling on top of that.  There are a couple of 'speciallty producers' here that are working on how to get the fish (salmon or 'but) to market and all I hear about from them are transporation costs.
